Herbalife Enhanced Marketing Plan

As I've mentioned before, the Herbalife product range is nothing short of brilliant. Having such excellent products at our disposal, we, as Herbalife members, can make a really good income - either part time (which I'm currently doing) to supplement your current income, or full time and achieve career level incomes!

In the last couple of months Herbalife has again enhanced the marketing plan. The marketing plan is basically the compensation plan for anyone doing the business - how we make money. As with other MLM companies, there are certain levels in this marketing plan (just as there are in any conventional business).

Joining Herbalife as a Member entitles you to order your products directly from the company at a discount. There are no minimum orders that you must place, and the discounts are quite substantial. You start at a 25% discount, and can work yourself up to 35%, 42% and ultimately 50%.

Moving up in this marketing plan has to do with two things - how many products you purchase (either to use yourself or to sell in the marketplace) and sponsoring others into the business to do the same.

The enhancements I mentioned earlier entails the 35%, 42% and 50% discount levels.

Firstly, and this is one that really excited me the most, is that you can start earning commission at the 35% level now - it used to be only from 42% and 50%, but the company has now opened commissions up at the 35% level as well! That's an extremely sweet deal, because getting to the 35% level is not only easy (in the line of 5 - 7 customers who bought from you in one month, including your own products), it is also one you will stay at forever once you've reached it! Commission is based on the difference between your 35% discount, and people you've sponsored at 25% discount - that 10% gets paid to you as commission (aka passive income!).

Next, it has become easier to reach the 42% level, as well as the 50% level - basically the company is putting a greater emphasis on sponsoring other people into the business - either as club customers who buys their products at a discount, or people who actually want to sell products and sponsor others to make some money. Their activities now has a greater chance to help you reach the higher levels yourself!

Additional enhancements are various money back and buy back guarantees the company now has - this is really a revolutionary thing to make it basically risk-free to get into the business. After purchasing your member pack, you can get your money back within 90 days if you decide it's not for you.

What's more is that any products you bought and didn't use/sell, the company will buy back from you within 12 months after purchasing it.

Becoming a Herbalife member

Herbalife has been around now for over 30 years, and the company is better than ever. The products are excellent, and to become a member is so easy and has many great perks! There is also very little risk involved. This is something that a lot of people don't realise.

In South Africa, it costs less than R500 to become a Herbalife Member, but what's great is that the company gives you a 90 day money back guarantee. If you decided to join as member, and for whatever reason decide it's not for you, you can get your sign up costs reimbursed within in 90 days of signing up.

The company even allows you to return any unsold products purchased in the last 12 month period if you have decided to cancel your membership.

There are two kinds of people who want to become a Herbalife member:

How to get results by using the Herbalife products

I tried all my life to lose weight, but I always did it kinda on my own. I always attempted something or another, be it exercising, going on weird diets or just cutting calories. Nothing worked, and now I know why. There are a few fundamental concepts you need to know about before you attempt to lose weight.

Firstly, it's not really losing weight.

What is weight?

That is how much the sum of your parts, so to speak, weigh. But, the important thing is what those parts are. For example, does your actual weight consist out of more muscle and less fat, or more fat and less muscle, or lots of fat and lots of muscle, or a too little of both. How much is water? What about your bone?

This picture explains it quite nicely:


You see, both these guys weigh the same, and have the same BMI (more on this later), but look at the big difference between them.

So, if you want to lose weight, understand WHAT it is that you want to lose. Healthy weight loss is about losing FAT, and not muscle, in fact, you want to gain muscle!

When you go to a clothing store to buy a pair of jeans, you don't browse in the 60-65kg rack, that doesn't exist! You look at the SIZE of the jeans, not how much weight it can take. For example, you'll buy a size 8 or 10 jeans, not a 55kg or 60kg jeans.

Keep this in mind, you say you want to lose weight, but in actual fact, you want to drop body fat percentage, and raise muscle mass. That is the key to healthy weight loss.

So, if you have one of these:


For the love of all things decent, throw it away! NOW!! It cannot accurately tell you what results you are getting, no matter which eating or exercise plan you're following. Rather get one of these:


A measuring tape is a much better way to measure your results than a scale that simply measures weight. And here is where you can measure yourself once a week to track your results:


When I lost weight, I lost all over my body - my wife even had to buy me a new wedding ring! My big sausage fingers turned into normal fingers, and I almost lost my ring a couple of times because it just started slipping off!

Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about:

Calories/Kilo joules

Calories and Kilo joules are both measurements for energy, and we use those to values to see how much energy we are getting from the food we eat. Most labels on food products out there has an indication of how much calories or kilo joules the said item has, usually per 100 grams and per serving (and it will specify how big a serving is).

Some labels have calories, others have kilo joules - to convert from one to the other is easy - for a more or less value, to convert calories to kilo joules, simply multiply it by 4. For a bit more accurate figure, multiply by 4.2. Calories is always the smaller number of the two.

Why are these figures important you might think? Well, it's quite simple really - your body burns a certain amount of energy each day. The energy it burns comes from the food we eat. If you take in more calories than what you're burning, you will gain weight. Take in the same amount, and you'll maintain your weight. Take in less and you'll lose weight. I'm sure you can now see why this is an important number.

Basal Metabolic Rate - how much calories or kilo joules your body burns per day at rest

Your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR, is the amount of calories or kilo joules your body burns at rest. And when I say "rest", I literally mean how much energy you would burn in a 24 hour period of you only slept. Now, this value is different for different people. A lot of factors comes into play, things like your muscle mass, how tall you are and of course your gender.

The only way to get an accurate number for this is to do some kind of body analysis measurement. Generally speaking though, for guys it's around 1800 - 2200 calories per day, and for ladies 1400 - 1600 calories per day. But please, these are just averages, you might be a very short thin lady, and your BMR might be around 1100 calories. You might be a 2 meter tall guy made of pure muscle, with a BMR of 2800 calories. Best way to get the actual reading is to do a body analysis.

Why is this an important number - well, the idea is, if you want to lose weight, take in a little bit less calories than your BMR. The trick though, isn't to just look at calories. Our body needs nutrients after all, to function properly. By just cutting calories, yes sure you will lose weight, but you want to make sure you're losing the right kind of weight - and that is body fat. The last thing you want is to lose muscle mass.

If you just cut calories, and do not give your body the right nutrients in the calories you do consume, you will have a bad time. Firstly you'll be hungry all the time - your body will be like "FEED ME, FEED ME!!" and you either don't or give it the wrong stuff. Secondly, although you might lose weight, it may just be that you're losing muscle.

Enters PROTEIN

Protein is by far one of the most important macro nutrients our body needs for proper function. It's not just for people who hits the gym everyday to bulk up - everyone needs protein. Protein breaks down into essential amino acids, and those are basically the fuel that our body needs on a cellular level. If you don't get in enough protein, your body needs to find it somewhere, that's why it will basically start self-cannibalizing, eating away at your muscle to get the protein it needs. And most people are happy, because the scale says they're losing weight...

Protein comes from lots of sources - most people think that it only comes from meat and dairy - it does come from those things, but you get plant based protein as well. The most popular source of plant based protein is Soy. You also get protein from stuff like nuts, beans and legumes.

Each person needs a specific amount of protein per day, but generally speaking it's between 75 and 100 gram for ladies, and 100 and 125 grams for guys. Again, these figures might vary, depending on your height and current weight, etc.

Get enough protein, and your body is well fed on a cellular level. It's unfortunately not completely that simple. For example, get in your protein by eating steak, you are also getting in a lot of bad fat and cholesterol too! Enjoy some eggs (because they're a good source of protein), but eat the yellows as well, again you're getting fat and cholesterol.

The trick is to get in enough protein everyday, but to also keep your calories low - lower than your BMR. If you can achieve this, you will lose body fat, and sometimes that naturally causes you to lose weight on the regular old scale as well.

How Herbalife helps

A Herbalife healthy meal is a great way to go about losing weight. It's as simple as substituting two main meals with a healthy Herbalife meal smoothie, having some healthy snacks in between (with protein of course) and a healthy main meal (think in the line of lean meat, like chicken or turkey, and nice vegetables). Not only is Herbalife high in protein (18 grams per serving), it also has tons of awesome nutrition like vitamins and minerals and fiber as well.

Herbalife is, simply put, high in nutrition, and low in calories. One smoothie is only about 220 calories (depends on how you prepare it of course) - as you can see, that leaves plenty of calories for the rest of the day - for example, if you're a woman and need to take in 1200 calories per day, that's no easy task without Herbalife, but add two healthy smoothies, and you are only down about 450 calories for the day. Have two 100-150 calorie snacks, which leaves a good 450 or so calories over for your main meal.

The best advise I can give to lose weight

Losing weight can be a daunting task, but it can be a bit simplified with some effort from your side. So, you already have a great eating plan, that includes your two Herbalife shakes, some healthy snacks and a main meal. The important part now is to stick to it!

What I found helped for me when I was on my weight loss journey, was to plan properly ahead. Here's an example of what a typical day for me would look like:

Within an hour of waking up, I always start with a Healthy Herbalife Breakfast - that is a shake, a cup of instant herbal beverage and a glass of herbal aloe. This is the easiest part, next is to make sure I have my first snack around 10:00, and then another shake around 13:00, my second snack around 16:00, and supper around 19:00.

What I mean with planning is to physically write down what your snacks and main meal will be for that day, and put those items in containers so that you can just quickly go get it. My 10:00 snack is an apple, and about 20 raw almonds - so in the fridge, the apple is there already cut up to make it easier, and the almonds have already been put in its own little container, ready to grab and eat.

Lunch is easy again, making a shake is such an easy way to make sure you're getting in something healthy. My soy milk is in the fridge, and the tub of shake and shaker is all together on the counter.

My mid afternoon snack is some tuna mixed with fat free cottage cheese, and a plum. These I also set aside, so it's quick and easy to grab.

Then for dinner, we have a nice chicken stir fry - the chicken is already cut up and ready to cook, the veggies are in the fridge, and the wok is within easy reach.

I'm lucky that I work from home, so all of this is especially important if you don't work from home. After supper, plan the next day - make sure you take your shake servings to work and your snacks. It also helps to have your 2 or 3 liters of water in 500ml containers, that way, you know you should drink one every 90 minutes or so.

Believe me, if you're on a eating plan to lose weight, your planning and preparation for the next day is crucial. Make it as easy for yourself as possible. If you don't, the temptation to go get a muffin and coffee is so much more. If you get this part right from the beginning, you'll get amazing results, just like we did!

Betting against Herbalife - not a good idea

At the end of 2012 Bill Ackman shorted a Billion Dollars on Herbalife, stating that it's an illegal pyramid scheme. Ever since then, Herbalife's stock has just been climbing, because the need for the awesome products is increasing world wide.

In a very interested turn of events, the following was discovered by the New York Times:
  • The Times found significant replication of language in letters sent to regulators
  • The Times reported that some individuals whose signatures were on anti-Herbalife letters either don’t remember signing them or feel duped by Mr. Ackman’s lobbyists. One Connecticut resident confessed that not only did he not remember writing, but he barely knew what Herbalife was: “One came from the mayor of the city of Waterbury, another from a former state legislator that Mr. Ackman had hired as a lobbyist, and a third from Israel Alvarez, a Puerto Rican-born hairstylist in Hartford. In a telephone interview, Mr. Alvarez said he did not recall writing the letter. Asked if he had ever heard of the company named Herbalife, he said it was ‘a vitamin thing, and food thing’.”
  • A Californian who wrote in after attending a rally against Herbalife that had been funded by Ackman allegedly did so without knowing of Mr Ackman’s connection: “Have I become an instrument in some billionaire’s investment campaign?” the Times reported him as saying, adding that he now regrets sending the letter. “I don’t want to be an unwitting pawn, and that is how I am feeling right now.”
  • Even with all of this effort, Ackman and his lobbyists were unable to produce real, verifiable complaints according to both the Nevada and Connecticut Attorneys General.
  • The Times also quoted former SEC Chairman Harvey L. Pitt stating Mr. Ackman’s campaign was starting “to look like an effort to move the price rather than spread the truth.  If you are trying to spread the truth, that is O.K. If you are trying to move the price of a stock to vindicate your investment philosophy, that’s not O.K.”
  • The Times reported that corporate money is forever finding new ways to influence government. But Mr. Ackman’s campaign to take this fight “to the end of the earth,” using every weapon in the arsenal that Washington offers in an attempt to bring ruin to one company, is a novel one, fusing the financial markets with the political system.
  • To pressure state and federal regulators to investigate Herbalife, an act that alone could cause its stock to dive, his team has helped organize protests, news conferences and letter-writing campaigns in California, Nevada, Connecticut, New York and Illinois, although several of the people who signed the letters to state and federal officials say they do not remember sending them, an investigation by The New York Times has found.  His team has also paid civil rights organizations at least $130,000 to join his effort by helping him collect the names of people who claimed they were victimized by Herbalife in order to send the leads to regulators, the investigation found. Mr. Ackman’s team also provided the money used by some of these individuals to travel to Washington to participate in a rally against Herbalife last month.
  • Additionally, the Times indicated that Mr. Ackman’s staff acknowledges that this crusade is really rooted in one goal: finding a way to undermine public confidence in Herbalife so that his $1 billion bet will produce an equally enormous return. Mr. Ackman has said he will donate any profits he personally earns to charity, calling it “blood money.” The clients who invest in his hedge fund, however, would still benefit enormously.

What 30000 calories look like

I was shocked when I came across this movie clip on Youtube, but it really got me thinking as well. The big woman's sister is entirely delusional, thinking her sister eats healthier than her. The fact is, so many people out there do not have a clue about what they're actually putting into their bodies, and then they think, well, during the day I had a cup of strawberries, so I'm eating healthily!

Be prepared to be shocked:

What are Calories and Kilo Joules?

Before the wife and I started with Herbalife and radically changed our lives for the better, we didn't really know about how much calories food contain, or how much calories you need on a daily basis.

Firstly, we always say calories, but it's actually abbreviated kcal, which stands for kilo calories. So, when we talk about calories in general, we're actually talking about kilo calories - saying an apple is 100 calories, actually means it's 100 000 calories (100kcal).

Then we have Kilo Joules. Both kj and kcal are measurements for energy, and to convert kj to kcal the quickest is to simply divide by 4. If you want to be a bit more accurate, divide it by 4.2. The official value is 4.182, but generally speaking, 4 is close enough!

Our bodies need energy to function, and it's as simple as if you take in more energy than what you need, you'll basically gain weight. Take in a little less (but not too much less), then you'll start to gradually lose weight. Now, it's not entirely that simple - for example, you need to get in enough protein, vitamins, minerals and water as well, and still try to get in less energy than what your body needs (don't worry, it'll draw some energy from your stored fat reserves = that's how you lose weight).

Generally, men have it lucky in this regard - we can eat quite a few more calories per day than women. For guys it's around 1800kcal, and women around 1400kcal. Now, these figures are just a generalization - it all depends on stuff like how tall you are, how much muscle you have and so on.

This number (again, it will vary from person to person) is called our Resting Metabolic Rate. It's how many calories we burn at rest during the course of the day. Take in a few hundred calories less than that, and you'll lose weight. Take in the same amount, and you'll maintain your weight. Take in more, and you'll gain weight.

So deep fried stuff = almost never a good idea, especially if you want to lose weight! Sugars = ok if used very sparingly. Fish and poultry = very good idea! Colourful fruit and veggies = a GREAT idea!

In South Africa most labels only have a kilo joule value on, so keep this in mind when you go out shopping!

What exactly is "Passive Income"

When I was about 20 years old, I read Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad. If you haven't read it, please do - I promise it will completely change your outlook on life.

In that book, I learned about active and passive income. Active income is income we get by doing something actively - for example, having a job and earning a salary is a form of active income. A freelance web designer makes money when he designs a website and invoices his client. A hair dresser earns money when she cuts someone's hair.

Although there's nothing wrong with earning money by doing something like this, it will hardly ever make you rich. There is one problem though - should you lose your job, you lose your income. And even working for a big corporate company doesn't ensure that your income is safe. I have a very good friend who was retrenched, because his company was in an hostile takeover, and the company doing the taking over, didn't have room for his department anymore.

Now, passive income. That is what everyone should stride towards. Passive income, simply put, is income you make, whether you work or not. A good example is to have a huge amount of money in the bank, and the interest you would get on that is a form of passive income. But not everyone has a million Rand lying around to put in the bank, and the interest rates are shockingly low. Another way is to have property, and renting it out. If you are making more money than what the property is costing you, even if it's just R500 per month, then it's passive income.

To take the whole property angle further, you would ideally have someone who looks after the property in terms of maintenance. You'll also probably have a rental agent who makes sure the tenants pay on time and things like that. All of this means that you can go away for any amount of time, and still get that monthly rental income. Have enough properties like that, and you can retire young.

Herbalife is what we call a MLM company, or Multi-level Marketing. The whole idea behind a MLM company is instead of having huge advertising budgets, they tend to focus on individuals going out and moving their product. Where the passive income starts is when you're successful in the business, and you teach others your skills. Herbalife rewards you for doing just that. In regular business, you would be crazy to teach other people your skills - they will become your competition in the marketplace. How to have a HOT Herbalife Shake

It's sometimes not very easy to have a cold shake when it's cold outside. With winter approaching, a hot shake can make a huge difference! Check out this awesome recipe video by Susan Bowerman - she always has great ideas to share, and this one is no different:


Now, we don't get the coffee flavoured shake here in South Africa, but I'm sure this will taste just as good with the Chocolate flavour and some good quality instant coffee - a nice mocha shake. Definitely gonna try that!

My Healthy Active Lifestyle

I'm not one of those people who grew up liking exercise. I even stopped playing rugby in school because my brother got me all scared of how hard they always trained - I just wasn't in the mood to put myself through that torment!

I grew up in a small town, and my mother was the best cook in the world! The result of that was that I was always a bit on the overweight side of the scale. Not massively, but a good 20% heavier than I should be.

After school, I tried several things to lose some weight, be it dieting, exercising (that didn't help) or even starving myself (that only lasted half a day though). Nothing worked, but at least I was gaining more weight. I was still 15-20kg overweight though...

When my awesome wife and I got married, it went a bit downhill from there. We were in the typical "happy" phase, and we both gradually started gaining weight. The nice restaurants and food you get here in Cape Town didn't help either!

Long story short, we were introduced to Herbalife. I lost 16kg, my wife 15kg - but the best part is, we've been able to maintain that with very little effort!

I am also now proud to announce that we're both following a healthy active lifestyle (something I never though I'd say or do!). We're not as strict with what we eat, but that doesn't matter. We're both exercising, and still having our healthy Herbalife shakes on a daily basis - and we feel great!

Just to quickly share what I'm doing as part of my healthy active lifestyle:
  • I've started surfing, and try to hit the waves at least twice a week. The ice cold water of Bloubergstrand also helps burn extra energy!
  • On the mornings I don't surf, a group of us do the Herbalife 24 fit DVD series (at the time of writing this, we're about 9 weeks in on the programme)
  • And about 3-4 times a week, a good friend and I jog - we started really slow - around our block is about 850 meters (half a mile more or less). In the first week we did one "lap". Week 2 we did 1.5 laps. Weeks 3-6 we did 2 laps (a full mile). And we're on 3 laps (2.5km, or 1.5 miles). It's going great, and I've even bought myself decent running shoes.
There you have it. I'm now enjoying a healthy active lifestyle, and I can genuinely say it started with me having my first Herbalife shake in September 2011.

It was a gradual change, which helped. If you plan on doing something like this as well, start at the beginning and take it one step at a time. If you have weight to lose, focus on getting that done first by getting your nutrition habits fixed. Believe me, if you've lost some weight, you'll automatically want to start getting more active as well. And if you need any help, give me a shout, I'll gladly help where I can!

Tasty Herbalife Shake Recipes

Most people thinks that eating healthy is a boring affair. But with a little bit of effort, it really don't have to be. Herbalife's Formula 1 Healthy Meal shakes are really great low in calorie and high in nutrition meals. Here are some awesome recipes to make some kickass smoothies!

Fruit Juicy Shake
1 Serving of Formula 1 Strawberry shake mix
250ml Easygest (lactose free) milk, or Soy milk
1 cup strawberries
1/2 grapefruit
4-6 ice cubes (optional)

Mocha Shake
1 Serving of Formula 1 Chocolate shake mix
1 Teaspoon instant decaf coffee
250ml Easygest (lactose free) milk, or Soy milk
half a banana
4-6 ice cubes (optional)

Sweet Sensation Shake
1 Serving of Formula 1 Tropical Fruit shake mix
1 Fresh peach
1 Fresh apricot
250ml Easygest (lactose free) milk, or Soy milk
3-6 ice cubes (optional)

Peach Shake
1 Serving of Formula 1 Vanilla shake mix
250ml Easygest (lactose free) milk, or Soy milk
1 Fresh peach
4-6 ice cubes (optional)

I found the best way to enjoy your shake the most is to experiment! When we're really hungry, we always have what we call our Deluxe Chocolate shake - here's how we make it:

Deluxe Chocolate Shake
2 Servings of Formula 1 Chocolate shake mix
2-4 scoops Formula 3 Personalized Protein Powder
500ml Easygest Milk (or soy milk)
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 whole banana
few ice cubes

Blend and enjoy! Serves 2
